This site is probably the best place to begin if you have never heard of Linux.

If you need help installing Linux, linuxnewbie.org has lots of help file resources for people with little or no experience with Linux.

Linux Software Resources

Rpmfind
www.rpmfind.net
This is a great site to get software already packaged in the Redhat Package Manager (RPM) format. Most distributions include some sort of support for RPMs. However, typically the version available on Rpmfind.Net will be a little older than the latest version that is available for any particular piece of software.

FRESHMEAT
www.freshmeat.net
In the about for this site, it says "freshmeat is the first stop for Linux users hunting for the software they need for work or play." freshmeat has a database for software that contains information describing software, links to get it, and who to contact for more information.
